Easy No-Carve Pumpkin Decorating Ideas for Kids & Adults
Carving pumpkins is a Halloween tradition, but sometimes you want the pumpkin without the knives, the piles of seeds and the orange mess covering the kitchen table.
That’s where no-carve pumpkins come in.
They’re an easy option for younger kids, a fun family activity and, with a few paints and something good to drink, a pretty great excuse to invite a few friends over too.
You don’t need an elaborate craft setup or perfect artistic skills. Pick a few supplies, cover the table and let everyone make their pumpkin their own.
Start With a Clean, Dry Pumpkin
Before decorating, wipe down the outside of the pumpkin to remove dirt and let it dry completely.
If you’re painting, a clean, dry surface will give you a better place to start.
And don’t worry about finding the most perfectly shaped pumpkin in the patch. A crooked stem, funny bump or lopsided shape may end up being the best part of the design.
Easy Ways to Decorate a Pumpkin Without Carving
There isn’t one right way to decorate a pumpkin. Choose a method based on who’s decorating, what supplies you already have and how much cleanup you’re willing to deal with afterward.
Paint a Pumpkin
Painted pumpkins can be as simple or elaborate as you want.
Try stripes, polka dots, ghosts, funny faces, fall leaves, flowers, geometric patterns, initials or a favorite saying.
For younger children, washable craft paint can make cleanup easier. Older kids and adults can use acrylic craft paint for more detailed designs.
Let one coat dry before adding another whenever possible.
Use Paint Pens
Paint pens are a great choice when you want more control without setting out several bowls of paint.
Use them for faces, names, lettering, small patterns or outlining a painted design.
They’re also an easy addition to a pumpkin decorating party because everyone can share a selection of colors without needing a separate paint setup.
Add Stickers & Googly Eyes
For little ones, this may be all you need.
Set out Halloween stickers, alphabet stickers, self-adhesive foam shapes and googly eyes and let them create.
A few oversized googly eyes can turn a pumpkin into a silly monster in about thirty seconds—which may be exactly the right amount of crafting for some kids.
Try Temporary Tattoos
Temporary tattoos can add surprisingly detailed designs to a pumpkin without requiring much artistic ability.
Halloween designs are an obvious choice, but florals, butterflies, stars or other patterns can create a completely different look.
Follow the application directions for the tattoos you’re using and work carefully around the pumpkin’s curves.
Decorate With Washi Tape
Washi tape is another low-mess option.
Create stripes, simple geometric patterns or mix several designs together.
This can be especially fun for kids who want to decorate independently without needing much help from a grown-up.
Add Ribbon or a Bow
Sometimes simple really is enough.
Tie ribbon around the stem, add a large bow or combine ribbon with a painted or sticker design.
It’s an easy way to dress up a pumpkin without covering the entire thing.
Use Yarn or Twine
Wrap yarn or twine around the stem, create sections around the pumpkin or use small pieces to add hair and other details to a pumpkin face.
Different textures can make even a very simple design more interesting.
Try Decoupage
Patterned paper or decorative napkins can turn a pumpkin into something completely different.
Florals, fall leaves, Halloween patterns or even black-and-white designs can work.
This one takes a little more time than stickers or paint pens, but it’s a fun choice for older kids and adults who want a more detailed project.
Let the Kids Make Their Own
It can be tempting to show children exactly where the eyes should go or suggest that perhaps the purple stripe would look better over there.
Try not to.
Give them age-appropriate supplies and let the pumpkin become whatever they think it should be.
The pumpkin with seven eyes, one eyebrow and a bow stuck to its side may not match the front porch decor.
It may also be the one everybody remembers.
Turn It Into an Adult Pumpkin Painting Night
No-carve pumpkin decorating isn’t just for kids.
It can also be an easy fall get-together with very little party planning required.
Make it a BYOP — Bring Your Own Pumpkin night.
Ask everyone to bring a pumpkin. You provide the table covering, paints, brushes, paint pens and a few extra decorating supplies.
Then add a simple cocktail and mocktail station, put on some music and let everyone paint.
Fall florals, monograms, house numbers, ghosts, plaid patterns, funny faces and more detailed painted designs all work well for an adult pumpkin night.
And nobody needs to be particularly artistic.
Sometimes the pumpkin that looks absolutely nothing like the inspiration photo is the one that provides the entertainment for the evening.
Add a Simple Cocktail & Mocktail Station
You don’t need a full bar for a pumpkin painting night.
Choose one simple fall cocktail and make sure there’s an equally good mocktail option. Set out the ingredients, glasses and garnishes somewhere away from the painting supplies so guests can help themselves.
Keeping the drink station separate from the craft table also reduces the chance of someone dipping a paintbrush into the wrong cup.
A very important party-planning detail. 😂
If you’re looking for drink inspiration, this is a great time to use apple, cranberry, pear, ginger, maple or other fall flavors rather than feeling obligated to make everything pumpkin spice.
Use a Hair Dryer Between Coats
Here’s one little thing worth putting near your pumpkin painting supplies: a hair dryer.
If someone wants to add another layer or detail before the first coat has dried, a hair dryer on a cool or low setting can help speed things along.
Keep the dryer moving rather than holding it close to one wet area, and use it for thin coats rather than trying to dry thick globs of paint.
At a party, this can save everyone from spending half the evening literally watching paint dry.
Don’t Forget How Everyone Is Getting Their Pumpkin Home
This is the detail that’s easy to overlook.
Everyone arrives carrying a plain, dry pumpkin.
A couple of hours later, they’re trying to leave with a pumpkin covered in paint, ribbon, googly eyes and decorations that may not be completely dry.
Have a stack of disposable trays or shallow cardboard boxes ready for the trip home.
Write each person’s name on their tray or box before decorating begins. When they’re finished, their pumpkin can go directly onto it.
It makes carrying the pumpkin easier and gives wet paint or loose decorations somewhere to land other than someone’s clothes, car seat or floor mat.
What to Put on a Pumpkin Decorating Table
You don’t need every possible craft supply. Choose a handful that work for the people you’re inviting.
A simple setup might include washable paint for younger children, acrylic craft paint for older kids and adults, paint pens, brushes in a few sizes, cups of water, paper towels, stickers, self-adhesive googly eyes, foam shapes, ribbon, yarn or twine.
Add a table covering, a hair dryer and disposable trays or shallow boxes for taking finished pumpkins home.
That’s plenty.
Gigi Says
A pumpkin decorating night doesn’t need to become another event that takes three days to prepare for.
Cover the table. Put out a few supplies. Let everyone bring their own pumpkin.
For the grown-ups, add a cocktail and mocktail. For the kids, add googly eyes—and accept now that someone is probably going to use all of them on one pumpkin.
The goal isn’t a row of perfectly coordinated pumpkins.
It’s spending a little time together and ending up with something that makes you smile when you walk past it.
