If You're Not Ready to Let It Go... Don't
Sometimes the best decision is deciding "Not Today"
There are two kinds of clutter.
The things we’re ready to let go of.
And the things we’re not.
Most decluttering advice tells you to make a decision right away. Keep it, donate it, sell it, or throw it away.
That works for some people.
For others, it’s exactly where they get stuck.
Sometimes it isn’t about the object at all.
It’s about the memory attached to it.
The money we spent on it.
The thought that we might need it someday.
Or simply the feeling that we’re not ready to say goodbye.
I’ve learned that forcing a decision doesn’t always move us forward.
Sometimes it stops us before we even begin.
That’s why I use something I call a Decision Box.
A Decision Box Isn’t Giving Up
It’s giving yourself permission.
Permission to say,
“I’m not ready today, and that’s okay.”
The Decision Box isn’t about avoiding decisions forever.
It’s about making them on your own terms.
Instead of standing in the closet for twenty minutes holding one sweater, wondering what to do with it, you simply place it in the Decision Box.
Then you keep going.
The room gets lighter.
Progress continues.
The difficult decision no longer has the power to stop the entire project.
Give Yourself Time
Choose a box, storage tote, or zippered storage bag.
Place anything you’re unsure about inside.
Attach a Decision Box label with today’s date and choose a future review date.
Maybe that’s one week.
Maybe two weeks.
Maybe a month.
Then put the box away.
Forget about it.
When the review date arrives, open the box with fresh eyes.
You’ll probably notice something surprising.
Some things won’t matter nearly as much as they did the day you packed them away.
Other things will still deserve a place in your home.
Either outcome is perfectly okay.
You’re Still Making Progress
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that progress doesn’t always mean finishing.
Sometimes progress means removing the obstacle that was keeping you from starting.
A Decision Box helps remove the pressure.
You aren’t making permanent decisions while you’re overwhelmed.
You’re making thoughtful decisions when you’re ready.
That’s a very different thing.
The Closet Isn’t the Only Place
A Decision Box works almost anywhere.
Clothing you’re unsure about.
Craft supplies.
Kitchen gadgets.
Books.
Holiday decorations.
Children’s keepsakes.
Paperwork.
Projects you haven’t finished.
Anything that leaves you standing still because you can’t decide.
Remember…
The goal isn’t to empty the room today.
The goal is to keep moving forward.
Part of Gigi’s One Step Collection
The Decision Box is one of the tools in Gigi’s One Step Collection, created to help make the weight of everyday living feel a little lighter.
Some days your next step is writing everything down on your Landing Pad.
Some days it’s cleaning one drawer.
Some days it’s simply deciding,
“Not today.”
Every one of those choices is still a step forward.
If you’re new to the collection, I invite you to start with When You Don’t Know Where to Start, where I share the philosophy behind taking one manageable step at a time.
Your One Small Step
If there’s something you’ve been avoiding because you’re not ready to decide, don’t let that one decision stop everything else.
Find a box.
Write today’s date.
Choose a review date.
Then keep going.
Sometimes that’s all it takes to make the weight of everyday living feel a little lighter.
Sometimes that’s all it takes to make the weight of everyday living feel a little lighter.

You don’t need anything special to create a Decision Box. A cardboard box and a piece of paper work just fine.
